Your morning is dedicated to the UNESCO-listed citadel of Carcassonne. During a private two-hour walking tour, you will explore the fortified city’s extraordinary layers of history, from its Roman origins to its medieval golden age and modern restoration. The visit weaves together Cathar history, medieval daily life, strategic military architecture, and the often-overlooked impact of the World Wars, all while enjoying panoramic views over the lower town (bastide) and discovering key sites such as the ramparts and the Counts’ Castle from the outside. After the guided tour, you will have free time to wander the cobbled streets at your own pace. Depending on your interests, this may include visiting the School Museum, entering the Counts’ Castle and ramparts, or simply enjoying the atmosphere of the citadel. Your guide will be on hand to assist with organization and recommendations. Free time is also left for lunch before leaving Carcassonne. In the afternoon, the journey continues into the hills of the Black Mountain, a landscape once ridden by knights and long used as a refuge during turbulent historical periods. In a small local village, you will enjoy a guided walk followed by a meeting with a local winemaker, who will introduce you to the character of the area through a wine tasting.
